Schloss Filseck

Filseck Castle stands on a rocky spur where the Pfuhlbach stream meets the river Fils near Uhingen in the Göppingen district. The castle was first built in the 13th century by the Counts of Aichelberg. In 1596 Burkhard von Berlichingen acquired the castle and remodelled it in Renaissance style. From 1749 to 1920 the von Münch banking family owned the property. A fire in 1971 destroyed the south and west wings. The district bought the ruin in 1986 and restored it by 1994. The castle now serves as a restaurant, museum and cultural centre. It also houses the Göppingen District Archive. Since 2008 the Schloss Filseck Stiftung, backed by the Kreissparkasse Göppingen, has run the site. The foundation organises concerts, exhibitions and guided tours. Visitors can explore the castle’s history through displays and information panels. A walk around the castle grounds offers views over the Fils valley. The restored wings contain the museum and archive reading rooms. The restaurant occupies the former knight’s hall, with vaulted ceilings and stone fireplaces. The site plan shows the layout of the castle and its surrounding terraces. The setting, high above the river, makes it a quiet place to see the countryside.
