Birkenberg

The Birkenberg stands at 533.4 m above sea level in the Ohm Hills, the highest point in this range. It lies in the Eichsfeld district of northern Thuringia, about one kilometre north of the village of Kaltohmfeld. The hill is mostly unforested, with only a cul-de-sac road leading from Kaltohmfeld to the summit. The final stretch of the route must be completed on foot. In the past, a Soviet Army base occupied the hill during East German times, though its ruins are now abandoned. The Birkenberg offers impressive views on clear days. To the north, the Harz Mountains and the Brocken are visible. The Kyffhäuser hills rise to the east near Nordhausen, while the Dün and the Thuringian Forest, including the Großer Inselsberg, can be seen to the south. The Gleichen hills, the Dransfeld Municipal Forest, and even the Kaufungen Forest near Kassel appear to the west, along with the summit of the Hoher Meißner. Visitors reach the top via the road from Kaltohmfeld, finishing the climb on foot. The open summit provides wide panoramas across central Germany. The absence of trees allows unobstructed sightlines to distant ranges. The remains of the old military base add a historical contrast to the natural landscape. The Birkenberg is a quiet spot for walkers seeking sweeping views of the surrounding countryside.
