St Catherine's Church, Draughton

St Catherine’s Church stands in the quiet village of Draughton in Northamptonshire. It is an Anglican parish church and a Grade II* listed building. The church occupies a central place among the village’s stone cottages and winding lanes. Its oldest parts date from the 12th and 13th centuries. The chancel was reshaped in the late 19th century. The building includes a nave, north and south aisles, a chancel, and a west tower. The church’s history is partly hidden in its parish registers, which begin in 1559. These volumes are kept at the Northamptonshire Record Office in Wootton. Draughton shares its parish with Faxton, Lamport, and Maidwell under one benefice. Only Faxton does not keep its own church open regularly. The absence of any mention in the 1086 Domesday Book suggests no permanent priest or building existed then. Inside, the nave and aisles frame a broad, simple space. The west tower rises above the entrance, marking the church’s place in the village. The chancel’s 19th-century remodelling added new detail to the older structure. The stone walls and roof timbers speak of many centuries of use. Visitors find a calm interior with light falling through clear glass. The churchyard holds weathered headstones that recall generations of villagers.
