St Laurence and All Saints Church

St Laurence and All Saints is a Grade I listed medieval church in Eastwood, a suburb of Southend-on-Sea beside the Thames estuary. It stands on Eastwoodbury Lane near the boundary of London Southend Airport, where aircraft pass close above the churchyard fence. The building mixes ragstone, flint and brickwork from different centuries, with a small timber-framed tower and broach spire at the west end of the south aisle. Inside, the nave and two side aisles form a plan said to resemble a gridiron, matching the dedication to St Laurence. The churchyard contains chest tombs from the 18th century and war graves, set among trees and wild flowers. The church is recognised as one of the finest small medieval churches in South Essex, with exceptional architectural and historical importance. Its Norman font, original doors and medieval woodwork survive, including a priest’s room. The tower’s spire was repaired by the Canadian Government after the Second World War as a memorial to airmen who flew from Southend. Three ancient bells dating from the 14th and 17th centuries were rehung in a new metal frame in 1984, with three lighter bells added to complete a ring of six. Visitors find a whitewashed interior with traces of medieval painting and plain pews from the 19th-century restoration by William White. The 16th-century south porch has reused timbers and a pre-Reformation niche above the door. The chancel roof is 14th-century, and a modern brick vestry extends from the north aisle. The churchyard offers a quiet space of grass and wild flowers, managed for wildlife, with monuments marking centuries of local history.
