Saukopf (Pfalz)

The Saukopf rises in the Alzey hill country of Rheinland-Pfalz as a gently rounded spur of the Zollstock ridge. It stands just one kilometre south-west of Immesheim and 700 metres north-north-east of the Zollstock summit, reaching 296.4 metres above sea level. The hill’s northern slope is lightly wooded while the rest of the upland is farmed, giving way to vineyards on the eastern side. To the south-east the village of Ottersheim lies along the Ammelbach stream, and to the south Rüssingen sits beside the small Wiesenbach tributary. The Saukopf was declared a nature reserve in 1957 and now covers about thirteen hectares of varied habitat. The reserve protects the hill’s northern flank and its transition into the Zellertal valley, where the Pfrimm river flows west of Albisheim. Open meadows and hedgerows mingle with patches of woodland, offering shelter to birds and small mammals. Walkers can follow grassy tracks that climb gently to the top, where wide views open across the Donnersbergkreis countryside. A circular path of roughly two kilometres winds through the reserve, passing old field boundaries and solitary oaks. From the summit visitors look north over the Pfrimm’s broad floodplain and east to the orderly rows of vineyards. On clear days the silhouette of the Donnersberg massif appears to the west. The quiet lanes around Immesheim lead back to the hill, completing a short but satisfying circuit.
