Bennecarrigan Free Church

The Bennecarrigan Free Church stands beside the A841 near the small village of Kilmory on the southern half of Arran. Built in the late 19th century in Gothic style, it served the local Free Church of Scotland congregation until its final service in 2009. The church and its boundary wall are made from yellow-brown sandstone quarried nearby, and Historic Scotland lists the building in category B as a recognised monument. The church began as a mission post opened in 1891 by the Free Church of Scotland at the south end of Arran. Services were held in a school for two years before the Ross Road building opened in 1893. The congregation’s adviser was the Rev. J. W. MacDougall from Shiskine, and locals nicknamed the church the Tin Tabernacle. Across the road stands a war memorial, while the surrounding area includes only a handful of houses. Visitors find a quiet stone church set against a low stone wall that once enclosed the graveyard. The yellow-brown sandstone gives the building a warm, earthy look. Nearby Kilmory has only a few hundred residents, so the church feels remote yet peaceful. The war memorial opposite adds a place for quiet reflection. The whole site reflects the modest scale of life on Arran’s southern coast.
