Vimy Barracks
The Vimy barracks stand in Freising, Bavaria, on the site of the former Neustift monastery. Built between 1904 and 1906 in the neo-Baroque style, the complex originally housed the 1st Royal Bavarian Jäger Battalion ‘King’, which had moved from the monastery. A water tower was added at the same time, still visible today. In the 1930s the site was enlarged and renamed Vimy barracks after the heights fought over at the Battle of Vimy Ridge in the First World War. During the Second World War the buildings escaped damage, and after 1945 American troops took over the site. After the war the barracks became home to the local administration and the 31st Air Force Signals Regiment, later joined by the 24th Radar Control Battalion. When the Cold War ended and the radar unit moved to another base, the Vimy barracks closed in 1993. The city of Freising bought the land and turned it into a residential area while preserving the historic buildings. The former officers’ mess now serves as the ‘House of Associations’, offering event rooms and the city archive. Visitors walk through a neighbourhood of modern homes and restored barracks blocks. The neo-Baroque façades of the old buildings remain intact, and one block still functions as the House of Associations. The water tower rises above the rooftops, a reminder of the site’s early 20th-century origins. The barracks are listed as historic monuments, keeping the memory of Freising’s military past alive in everyday life.
