Pfasserspitze

The Pfasserspitze is a 3,444-metre peak in the Schnalskamm range of the Ötztal Alps. It stands on the border between South Tyrol in Italy and Tyrol in Austria. The mountain’s long crest runs west to east between higher neighbours. To the south the ridge drops into the Pfossental valley within the Texelgruppe Nature Park. On the north side the Schalfferner glacier reaches almost to the summit. Climbers value the Pfasserspitze for its position on the main Alpine divide. The route from the south follows the Pfossental and crosses the Pfasserscharte col before the final climb. From the north the Schalfferner offers a glaciated ascent that tests route-finding skills. The mountain’s height and exposure make it a serious outing for experienced mountaineers. Guides often lead parties on the easier southern route in summer months. The summit ridge provides wide views across the Ötztal Alps and into South Tyrol. To the west the Wildspitze, the range’s highest point, appears above the Rossbergjoch. Eastwards the Texel peaks form a jagged horizon. On clear days the Ortler can be seen in the far distance. The contrast between the glaciated north face and the steep southern flanks adds to the mountain’s dramatic presence.
