Auferstehungskirche

The Auferstehungskirche stands in Wiener Neustadt, a town in Lower Austria, on the Ferdinand-Porsche-Ring. It is an Evangelical Lutheran church built in the early 20th century. The building replaced an earlier Protestant prayer house that had been destroyed in a fire. The church’s design reflects the conservative-modern Heimatstil of the period. The church is notable for its monumental tower and a relief above the entrance showing Christ with the words ‘Dein Wille geschehe’. Inside, a plain concrete ceiling spans the wide nave and deep apse. A new organ with eighteen stops was installed after the Second World War. The tower now hosts a gallery for art exhibitions. Visitors find a quiet urban setting beside a busy ring road. The tower gallery offers changing exhibitions of contemporary art. Three bronze bells cast in 1962 sound across the town. The church’s name, chosen in 1986, recalls its own resurrection after wartime destruction.
