Sender Herford

The Eggeberg in Herford-Schwarzenmoor once carried a 104-metre mast that broadcast the NWDR’s Mittelwellenprogramm from March 1950. A house beside the mast housed the control room and quarters for the station manager. In its final years the mast stood with 36 000 kg of steel and four sets of Pardunen at 46 m and 86 m to keep it upright. The transmitter sent WDR 1 at 2 kW on 702 kHz until the Mittelwellen service closed on 31 December 1993. A new 109-metre freestanding steel tower now rises on the same spot. It carries DAB+ multiplexes and the UKW programmes of Radio Herford and BFBS Germany. BFBS had used a separate 20-metre mast on the same site from 1955 until the 1980s. After British forces withdrew, BFBS returned in 2020 and shares the Eggeberg mast with local stations. Visitors see a quiet hilltop with a slender lattice tower against the skyline. The old mast’s foundations remain visible near the car park. A small plaque recalls the site’s broadcasting past. The view stretches across the Herford basin to the Teutoburg Forest. The tower itself is not open, but the open space around it invites a short walk and a look at the technical equipment.
