A medieval ruin stands on a wooded hilltop in the Oberpfalz. The Burgstall Hauzenstein rises on a spur called the Sonnenberg, about 150 metres north of the later Schloss Hauzenstein. First recorded in 1372, it was the stronghold of the Lords of Hauzenstein, passing through families such as the Paulsdorfer and the Brentano von Brentheim. During the Thirty Years’ War the castle was ruined and left to decay. Later owners quarried its stones to build a new manor below, yet the old foundations remain. The site is recognised as an archaeological monument under the Bavarian heritage register. It preserves traces of the medieval fortress that once commanded the surrounding valley. The hilltop offers long views across the Regensburg countryside, framed by beech and pine woods. Visitors walk among grassy mounds and low stone walls that mark the former towers and curtain walls. A quiet forest path leads from the modern Schloss up to the ruin, passing remnants of the old enceinte. At the crest stands a simple stone marker noting the site’s history. The clearing around the mound is kept open by local conservationists, allowing the layout of the castle to be read in the earthworks. In spring the woodland floor is dotted with wood anemones, while in autumn the beeches turn russet and gold. The ruin and its hilltop setting give a sense of how the medieval lords once watched over the region from this vantage point.
