Hoe Rough

Hoe Rough is a 12-hectare nature reserve in Norfolk, managed by the Norfolk Wildlife Trust. It lies north of Dereham and forms part of the Beetley and Hoe Meadows Site of Special Scientific Interest. The land is a mix of grassland and wet fen, creating varied habitats. Around 200 invertebrate species have been recorded here, alongside the rare great crested newt. Notable plants include green-winged and early marsh orchids, adding colour to the landscape. The site’s wet fen areas support specialised wildlife that thrives in damp conditions. The grassland provides open spaces for insects and birds, while the fen pools offer shelter for amphibians. The reserve’s management focuses on maintaining these delicate ecosystems. Its inclusion in the Site of Special Scientific Interest recognises its ecological importance. Visitors can explore the reserve’s quiet paths and observe its diverse flora and fauna. Public access allows walkers to wander through the reserve’s open grassland and wet fen. The varied terrain offers gentle routes for a peaceful visit. Wildflowers bloom in season, attracting butterflies and other insects. The rare great crested newt may be spotted near water edges.
