Loch Eilt

Loch Eilt is a long, narrow freshwater loch in the West Highlands of Scotland. It lies between Glenfinnan and Lochailort, about 30 kilometres west of Fort William. The A830 road runs along its northern shore while the West Highland Line railway follows the southern edge. The loch forms a natural boundary between the districts of Morar to the north and Moidart to the south. Several small islands dot its surface, including Eilean Mòr, Eilean an Tighe and Eilean Gaineamhach. The loch has appeared in well-known films, adding to its appeal. Local Hero was shot here in 1983. Later, scenes from Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 were filmed on its waters. One island, Eilean na Moine, became Dumbledore’s grave in the films, though the scene was digitally moved to Loch Arkaig. Visitors find a quiet Highland landscape of dark water and forested hills. The railway line offers views of the loch from passing trains. Walkers can follow paths along the northern shore or explore the shoreline near Lochailort. The islands remain peaceful, with only the occasional boat passing by. The area feels remote despite its cinematic fame.
