Penlee Point

Penlee Point is a rugged headland at the entrance to Plymouth Sound, part of Mount Edgcumbe Country Park in Maker-with-Rame, Cornwall. The headland is marked by a weather station at its tip and overlooks the waters where the Hamoaze meets the English Channel. A coastal path runs along the edge, offering views of passing ships and distant headlands. The point is known locally by its Cornish name Penn Legh, meaning ‘stone-slab headland’. It stands on the eastern edge of Rame Peninsula, a quiet stretch of coast between Plymouth and the Tamar. The land rises gently from the water’s edge to low cliffs topped by grassland. The site has been a landmark for sailors for centuries. Queen Adelaide’s Chapel, built in 1827, sits just below the coastal path above the point. The small eyecatcher was raised to mark the visit of King William IV and Queen Adelaide to Mount Edgcumbe. In the 1920s dockworkers from Plymouth used it as a lookout to watch for merchant ships entering or leaving harbour. Penlee Battery, once a fort defending the Sound, is now managed as a nature reserve. The battery’s old gun emplacements and magazines have been reclaimed by wild plants and nesting birds. The chapel and battery together show how the point has served both ceremony and defence. The contrast between the elegant chapel and the military ruins adds character to the site. Visitors walk the coastal path to the weather station at the tip of Penlee Point. From there they can see the breakwaters of Plymouth Sound and the ferry routes to France and Spain. Queen Adelaide’s Chapel can be reached by a short detour inland, its white walls standing out against the green slope. The nature reserve at Penlee Battery offers quiet paths through bracken and bramble where stonechats and linnets nest. The surrounding parkland includes wooded valleys and open meadows managed for wildlife. The views stretch across the Sound to the hills of south Devon on clear days. The point remains a place where land, sea and history meet.
