Church of St Lawrence, Alton

The Church of St Lawrence stands in the Hampshire town of Alton, a Grade I listed building whose walls contain centuries of English church architecture. It occupies the site where Anglo-Saxon settlers built a timber church around the year 500, though only a single stone font survives from that early period. The present structure began in the Norman era after 1066, its crossing arches still visible midway down the southern nave. Later Gothic additions include a Lady Chapel built in the 13th century and a pair of parallel naves added in the 15th. The exterior flint and plaster walls date from this final medieval phase, while the Victorian broach-spire crowns the older tower. The church’s long history is marked by royal and ecclesiastical events. William the Conqueror granted the building to Hyde Abbey in Winchester in 1087, exchanging it for land on which he wished to build his palace. Edward I’s charter of 1307 allowed the annual Alton Fair to be held on the church grounds until the bishop forbade it seven years later. The church also served as a centre of learning, hosting a grammar school founded by John Chanflower and recorded in a 1548 report to Edward VI. During the English Civil War the church became the final battleground of the Battle of Alton in December 1643. Inside, visitors find the returned Anglo-Saxon font standing on a mill wheel at the west end of the south nave. Norman carvings on the crossing pillars show a wolf eating a bone, a pelican and cherubs among other figures. The 15th-century north nave contains three painted saints on the second pillar from the west, while the Lady Chapel holds wooden statues of St George and St Michael. The 17th-century pulpit remains in place, described by Pevsner as an outstanding example of its period. The church’s continuous parish registers and churchwarden accounts, begun in 1615 and 1625, still record daily life in Alton.
