Dunklhof
The Dunklhof stands in Steyrdorf, a district of Steyr in Upper Austria. It is a late-Gothic town house with a Renaissance arcaded courtyard. The building faces Kirchengasse and its upper storey projects forward in a striking Kragstock façade. The house began as a 15th-century dwelling and once housed the lower court of justice. Around 1520–25 an arcaded courtyard was added, its columns carved with ornamental details and its corner piers enriched with tracery. In 1996 craftsmen restored the roof and reused hand-split tiles in the courtyard, while new ‘Kirchenbiber’ tiles were laid on the side slopes. The façade towards the street was repainted yellow in 2006. Inside the courtyard visitors see the stone arcade and the restored roof edges. The house remains a private home but also hosts concerts and readings. A gallery now occupies the former pharmacy space. The annual serenade evenings, begun by Dora Dunkl in 1959, continue to be held here.
