Castra of Rückingen

The Kastell Rückingen was a Roman fort beside the Kinzig river near Rückingen, now part of Erlensee. It stood on the Wetterau line of the Upper Germanic-Rhaetian Limes, a frontier system recognised by UNESCO in 2005. The site lay where the Kinzig was navigable for small ships, allowing supplies to reach many forts along the Wetterau Limes by water rather than overland. The fort was built between AD 110 and 125, probably under Trajan or Hadrian. It housed the Cohors III Dalmatarum, a 500-man infantry unit originally raised in Dalmatia. After the Limes fell around AD 260 the fort and its civilian settlement were abandoned. Excavations in the 19th and 20th centuries uncovered parts of the stone defences, headquarters and bath-house, while nearby graves and a mithraeum revealed more about daily life. Today the only visible remains are the reconstructed foundations of the south-facing bath-house, set within a children’s playground. Information boards explain the layout. The route of the old Roman road is still followed by the local road, and the Kinzig crossing preserves traces of a timber bridge. The surrounding meadows and woods mark where the Limes once ran, linking this quiet riverside spot to a wider frontier story.
