Castle Knowe, Kilruskin

Castle Knowe stands on a grassy mound west of North Kilruskin Farm along the Kilruskin Toll Road near West Kilbride in North Ayrshire. The mound rises about four metres on the north side and two on the south, its slopes showing signs of past ploughing. A deep ditch once ran around the base before the Kilruskin Burn was diverted through a culvert in the 19th century. The old road from Ardrossan to Largs and Fairlie passes close by, suggesting the site once controlled travel along this route. Local place names link the area to Saint Ronskan and to marshy ground once called ‘The Cell of the Rushes’. An oak tree on the east side hints at its possible use as a moot hill for courts and justice. The site has been described as a fortlet, castle hill, motte and bailey, and even a burial mound or tumulus. In 1895 the antiquarian John Smith measured the mound at thirty-seven paces across the base and noted long cultivation. Removal of stone ramparts in the 1890s revealed an oblong stone-lined cavity about two metres deep in the centre of the mound. Hand mills called querns found nearby point to nearby dwellings, though later ploughing yielded few further finds. The cavity’s drystone walls and lack of a roof resemble souterrains found in Cornwall, Ireland and Pictland. Visitors today see a simple grassy hill with no visible stonework, its shape softened by centuries of farming. The surrounding Kilruskin Woods rise toward the old Hunterston Conveyor overbridge, while the Kilruskin Burn once powered a water mill at North Kilruskin that worked until the 1940s. A nearby toll house once stood at the road junction, and the wider landscape still carries names tied to Saint Ronskan and the marshy past. The mound remains a quiet landmark, its history read only in its shape and the names of the land around it.
