American Museum and Gardens

The American Museum and Gardens stands on a steep slope above the River Avon valley near Bath, Somerset. A Grade I listed 19th-century manor house displays American decorative arts and culture. The house was designed by Jeffry Wyatville for barrister John Vivian in 1819–20. Its ashlar stonework and classical details overlook the valley. Earlier owners included Ralph Allen and members of Parliament. The estate later hosted Winston Churchill’s first public speech in 1897. The museum was founded in 1961 by antique collectors Dallas Pratt and John Judkyn. It remains the only museum of American decorative arts outside the United States. Over three million visitors have explored its collections since opening. The founders aimed to strengthen US–UK cultural ties through historical artefacts. Richard Wendorf served as director from 2010 to 2021. The coach house now hosts weddings and events. Inside the manor, visitors find period rooms from 1690 to 1860, including a Puritan home and a New Orleans bedroom. The collection features Shaker furniture, quilts, maps, and folk art by artists such as Grandma Moses. Temporary exhibitions explore modern American history. Outside, gardens include a replica of George Washington’s Mount Vernon garden and a Lewis and Clark trail. The New American Garden, opened in 2018, displays native shrubs and perennials along accessible paths. Views stretch over the Limpley Stoke Valley and the Kennet and Avon Canal.
