Schloss Horneburg
Schloss Horneburg stands on the edge of Datteln in the Recklinghausen district. It began as a medieval stronghold first recorded in 1220 among the holdings of the Count of Isenberg-Altena. The lords of Oer made it their seat until 1418, when defeat forced them to leave. Afterward the castle became the centre of the elector of Cologne’s estate administration for the Vest Recklinghausen. The site witnessed key events in regional history. In 1583 it was occupied during the Truchsessian War, and from 1588 to 1590 it hosted the criminal court that conducted witch trials. In 1646 French forces burned the castle in reprisal for a local defeat. Later it served as a school, a mothers’ convalescent home and a boarding school before reopening in 2023 as a youth welfare institution. Visitors find the former moated castle now arranged around a spacious courtyard. The 17th-century chapel, with its two-bay nave and five-sided chancel, holds ribbed vaults and a baroque high altar. Outside, the surrounding parkland follows the line of the old ramparts, offering quiet walks beside water-filled ditches. The chapel’s three bells still ring over the fields where medieval farmers once delivered their dues.
