Burg Baitenhausen

Burg Baitenhausen once stood on the Schlossberg near Baitenhausen, a district of Meersburg on the edge of Lake Constance. Its exact location remains uncertain, though some historians suggest it may have been on the Schlossbühl near the Maria zum Berge Karmel pilgrimage chapel. The first written mention of the area comes from 1169, when a priest named Heinrich von Bettinhusen appears in records, though his title does not confirm the existence of a castle. By around 1200, a local nobleman named Herbort von Baitenhausen is recorded, possibly related to the ministerials of Steckborn on the Swiss shore. The Baitenhausens likely belonged to the same noble family as those serving the Abbey of Reichenau. The castle passed into the hands of the Bishop of Constance before 1274, when Hiltpolt von Steckborn sold it along with its lands. During the 14th and 15th centuries the bishop’s estate was repeatedly pawned to local nobles and officials. These transactions show how the site shifted from private control to church authority and back again. The lack of clear archaeological traces suggests the structure was modest or short-lived. Still, the name and records link it to the broader network of castles and estates around Lake Constance. Visitors today find a quiet hilltop with views over the lake and the surrounding countryside. The pilgrimage chapel stands nearby, its white walls contrasting with the green slopes. A walking path leads up the Schlossbühl, where information boards explain the castle’s history. The site offers little in the way of ruins, but the setting remains peaceful and reflective. From here, Meersburg’s old town and the lake’s expanse can be seen in the distance. The place invites a quiet walk and a moment of historical imagination.
