Schloss Eisenhofen

Schloss Eisenhofen stands in Hof, a hamlet near Erdweg in the Dachau district of Bavaria. The three-storey building rises from a high plinth on a gentle rise above the village. Its east wing, with its turret and hipped roof, dates from the 17th century, while the middle and west wings were added after 1860. The castle has passed through many hands since it first belonged to the Eisenhofer family in the 11th century. After the Thirty Years’ War left it in ruins, Bishop Johannes Franziskus rebuilt it between 1698 and 1718. For more than a century it served as a summer residence for the bishops of Freising until secularisation in 1803. Later it became a village school attended by figures such as Johannes Neuhäusler. Visitors today see the restored east wing with its turret and the later additions to the west. The early-18th-century chapel is dedicated to Saint Corbinian. The quiet lanes around the castle lead through Hof’s farmland and woods, giving a sense of the place’s long, layered history.
