Ramitelli

Ramitelli is a small village in the Molise region of Italy, lying on the left bank of the Saccione stream north of the Fortore river. Its landscape is shaped by gentle hills and fertile farmland, where Mediterranean crops thrive. The climate here is mild, typical of the region’s coastal plains. The village is part of Campomarino municipality, sharing services with nearby Nuova Cliternia. Agriculture remains the mainstay of the local economy. The village holds historical significance as the site of a temporary American airfield during the Second World War. The 332nd Fighter Group of the Tuskegee Airmen operated from this base, marking one of the first units composed entirely of African American pilots. A metal mesh runway was laid in early 1944, later used by several American units until the war’s end. Though the airfield was dismantled in 1945, traces of the runway can still be seen from the air. Local efforts, led by the Tuskegee Airmen Incorporated Italian Chapter and historian Marco Altobello, aim to preserve this legacy through memorials and events. Visitors today find a quiet rural setting with little visible trace of the airfield. The land has returned to farming, but information boards and plaques explain the site’s wartime role. The surrounding countryside offers gentle walks through olive groves and vineyards. Ramitelli’s agricultural life continues much as it did before the war, with shared services linking it to neighbouring villages. The village remains a peaceful place where history and rural tradition meet.
