Pfarrkirche St. Roman

The parish church of St. Roman stands in the village of Altendorf in the municipality of St. Roman in Upper Austria. It is a Roman Catholic church dedicated to Saint Roman of Rome and has been under official protection since the 15th century. The church belongs to the Diocese of Linz and celebrates its dedication festival every 9 August. The church began as a small chapel mentioned in records from 1433. For more than three centuries it served as a branch of the nearby parish of Münzkirchen. In 1784, during the reforms of Emperor Joseph II, St. Roman became an independent parish with its own patron. After nearly 250 years it has now joined the newly formed parish of Schärding. The building itself shows the transition from Gothic to Baroque styles. The nave has three bays with a net-ribbed vault, while the raised choir ends in a five-sided apse. A three-bay Gothic gallery at the west end is supported by cross ribs. The tower on the west front wears a Baroque dome. Inside, the furnishings follow the neogothic taste of the 19th century.
