Sauwald

The Sauwald is a broad plateau in Upper Austria, part of the Bohemian Massif south of the Danube. It stretches from Passau and Schärding on the Inn to Eferding, forming a quiet stretch of high land. The region was once known as Passauer Wald, showing its close ties to the Bishopric of Passau. Wild boar once roamed here, giving rise to its present name. The landscape remains largely wooded, with rolling hills and farmland. The Sauwald is worth visiting for its peaceful, unspoilt character. It lies away from busy routes, offering space for walking and cycling. The plateau’s gentle slopes make it ideal for family outings. Local villages keep old traditions alive, with small inns serving regional food. The area’s history is visible in old farmsteads and wayside crosses.
