Carolus Thermen

The Carolus Thermen in Aachen are a leisure-focused thermal spa with an attached sauna complex. They stand in the Monheimsallee spa quarter beside the Stadtgarten park, on the edge of the city centre. Built between 1998 and 2001 to designs by Munich architect Rudolf Wienands, the baths draw on Aachen’s long tradition of hot mineral springs first used by Charlemagne. The spa is supplied by the Rosenquelle, a state-recognised healing spring whose 47 °C water is piped directly into the pools. The mineral-rich brine contains sulphur, fluoride and other salts at a concentration of 4.2 g per litre. The Deutscher Wellness Verband has awarded the Carolus Thermen its highest ‘Premium-Qualität EXZELLENT’ seal, while the Deutscher Sauna-Bund has granted its Premium quality mark. Inside the 932 m² water area there are eight indoor and outdoor pools filled with thermal water at temperatures from 18 °C to 38 °C. A separate sauna world offers 14 saunas and steam baths, including a Baltic landscape, an oriental bath and a women-only area, all set among gardens and sun terraces. Treatments at the in-house CAROLUS spa range from massages to Hamam rituals, while three restaurants and a summer bar provide meals and drinks.
