BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir London

The BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Neasden is Europe’s first traditional Hindu stone temple, built entirely by hand using limestone and marble. It stands on Pramukh Swami Road near the North Circular Road, close to several Underground and Overground stations. The complex covers over 100,000 square feet and includes a temple, cultural centre, and landscaped gardens. It was inaugurated in 1995 by Pramukh Swami Maharaj and became the largest Hindu temple outside India at the time. The design follows ancient Vedic texts, with no steel used in its stone structure. The mandir rises 21 metres and stretches 60 metres long, topped by seven pinnacles and six domes. The temple’s interior contains 26,300 carved stone pieces and 55 different ceiling designs, inspired by the Delwara Jain Mandir in Rajasthan. A permanent exhibition called ‘Understanding Hinduism’ occupies the lower level, using dioramas and films to explain Hindu values. The adjoining BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Haveli is a wooden cultural centre built in traditional Gujarati style. Its façade features intricate carvings on Burmese teak and English oak, created by 150 craftsmen over three years. Inside, a pillarless prayer hall seats 3,000 people, along with a gymnasium, medical centre, and dining facilities. The mandir is surrounded by a garden with sculpted flowerbeds, lawns, and topiary arranged in Hindu motifs. The front uses parterre style while the rear has formal walkways symbolising the link between humans and nature. The garden won Brent in Bloom awards in 2009, 2010, and 2012. The complex also includes a library, bookshop, and health clinic. King Charles III and Queen Camilla visited in 2009 for Holi and praised the temple in 2020 for serving as a place of worship and community. Over 1,600 volunteers helped build the mandir, completing it in three years.
