Bovington Camp

Bovington Camp stands in the Dorset countryside near the village of Wool. It forms part of Bovington Garrison alongside Lulworth Camp. The base contains two barracks complexes and large forest and heathland training areas. These areas support advanced training for the Royal Armoured Corps and the Household Cavalry Regiment. The camp also hosts The Tank Museum on its grounds. The site has a long military history dating back to 1899. It began as an infantry training area before becoming a centre for early tank development in 1916. The Heavy Branch of the Machine Gun Corps moved here and later became the Tank Corps in 1917. By 1937 it had evolved into the Armoured Fighting Vehicles School. Today it is known as The Armour Centre. Visitors find The Tank Museum with its collection of historic armoured vehicles. The camp itself houses units like the Royal Tank Regiment and Royal Wessex Yeomanry. Training groups operate from Allenby Barracks and Stanley Barracks. Nearby Lulworth Camp hosts gunnery ranges for live firing exercises. The surrounding heathland provides open space for training drills.
