The Wood, Surbiton

The Wood is a public park in Surbiton within the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames. Part of the park is a bird sanctuary named after the naturalist Richard Jefferies. It covers 1.5 hectares and holds Local Nature Reserve status. The site was once the grounds of a 19th-century house that included a lake and woodland. In the 1930s the house was demolished and the land became a park in 1947. The bird sanctuary was created in 1980 when the upper section was fenced off. Typical woodland birds such as great spotted woodpeckers and tawny owls live here. Invertebrates include stag beetles, adding to the site’s ecological value. The wooded landscape provides a quiet refuge in an urban setting. Access is from Oak Hill Grove. Visitors find a peaceful green space with mature trees and shaded paths. Birdsong replaces city noise in many areas. The fenced sanctuary offers a chance to observe protected species at close range. Wildflowers grow among the undergrowth in spring and summer. The park remains a small but important haven for wildlife in Surbiton.
