Upper Austrian Prealps

The Upper Austrian Prealps stretch between the Traun valley near Gmunden in the west and the Enns valley in the east. They cover districts such as Steyr-Land and Kirchdorf and include parts of the Limestone Alps National Park. Two main mountain groups dominate the range: the Sengsengebirge and the Reichraminger Hintergebirge. Other notable peaks include the Kremsmauer, Kasberg and Traunstein. The Totes Gebirge range lies to the south but is now considered part of the Limestone High Alps. This range offers rugged highlands with dense forests, alpine meadows and rocky ridges. The Limestone Alps National Park protects much of the area, providing habitats for chamois, marmots and golden eagles. Hiking trails wind through valleys and over passes, linking mountain huts where walkers can rest. The region’s geology shows limestone formations shaped by glaciers and rivers over centuries. Visitors find well-marked paths leading to summits with wide views over Upper Austria. The Sengsengebirge’s wooded slopes contrast with the open grasslands of the Reichraminger Hintergebirge. Mountain huts like the Kasberg Haus stand ready for walkers seeking shelter or refreshment. The Traunstein offers a challenging climb with panoramic rewards.
