Lambeth North tube station

Lambeth North is a London Underground station at the corner of Westminster Bridge Road and Baylis Road in the London Borough of Lambeth. It sits between Waterloo and Elephant & Castle on the Bakerloo line in fare zone 1. The station is the nearest tube stop to the Imperial War Museum. In 2017 it was recorded as the least-used station in zone 1. The building was designed by Leslie Green and opened in March 1906 under the name Kennington Road. The station has witnessed notable events since it opened. A 1 800 kg German bomb struck a hostel in January 1941, damaging the southbound platform tunnel and injuring 28 people sheltering there. Repairs took 95 days, replacing tunnel rings and rebuilding 86 feet of platform. The name changed three times: to Westminster Bridge Road in 1906, to Lambeth (North) in 1917, and finally to Lambeth North in 1928. A crossover north of the station allows trains to terminate on either platform. The Northern line runs beneath but does not stop here. Inside, two lifts and a spiral staircase link street level to the platforms 21 metres below. Two tracks run in separate tunnels, and a crossover enables trains to enter service or return to the London Road Depot. Typical service is sixteen southbound trains per hour to Elephant & Castle and sixteen northbound trains towards Queens Park. London buses serve the station day and night. The station closed briefly in 2016 for maintenance before reopening early the following year.
