Round Tower and St Michael's Cross, Crossmichael Parish Church

Crossmichael Parish Church stands on a knoll at the north end of the village in Dumfries and Galloway. The oldest part is a slender circular tower, possibly from 1611, with tall lancet windows and a conical slate roof. The main block, built in 1749–1751, is a fine example of Georgian church design with a T-shaped plan. An extension was added in 1822–1823, and the tower was heightened in 1824–1825. The church was designated a Category A listed building in 1971, recognising its historical and architectural importance. The church’s interior remains unusually complete for its period. Raised galleries stand on Tuscan columns, and box pews bear names of local heritors such as the Gordons of Kenmure and the Copelands of Danevale. Two stained-glass windows add colour: the west window, by Heaton, Butler and Bayne, depicts the Risen Lord from 1898. The east window, titled Our Lord stilling the Storm, dates from about 1920. The burial ground contains tombstones from the seventeenth to the nineteenth centuries, including a Category A-listed memorial to William Gordon of Greenlaw. The hearse house at the foot of the knoll has been converted into a community history centre. The churchyard surrounds the building, with a burial enclosure for the Gordons of Culvennan to the west. The Gordon memorial, carved by self-taught sculptor S. Rae, features ornate decoration. The site likely began as an ancient place of worship, and the tower’s bell from 1611 still hangs inside. The church remains in regular use, while the former hearse house serves as an exhibition space for local history.
