Burg Waldsee

The Burg Waldsee once stood on the Burghalde hill northwest of Bad Waldsee at 590 metres above sea level. Built by the Lords of Wallsee in the 12th century, it overlooked the surrounding landscape before being abandoned in the early 14th century. A new water castle replaced it in the wetlands nearby, leaving the old hilltop site empty. The Lords of Wallsee controlled the region until the 14th century, when their power waned. Archaeologists have found no traces of the wooden and stone structures that once crowned the hill. Historical records describe its brief existence before it was replaced. Today the hilltop is quiet, with only a path marking where the walls once rose. Visitors walk the Burghaldenweg and see open meadows where the castle once stood. The view across the valley shows why the site was chosen long ago. Little remains of the fortress, but the hill still carries its name.
