Ben More Coigach

Ben Mor Coigach stands on the Coigach peninsula in the Highlands, rising steeply from Loch Broom. It is the highest point along a ridge that stretches above the loch, reaching 743 metres. The mountain overlooks the Summer Isles to the south and the peaks of Assynt to the north. On clear days, views extend to Skye and the Outer Hebrides. The area is managed as a nature reserve by the Scottish Wildlife Trust. The mountain offers two main routes for climbers. One starts from Blughasary, following a 4x4 track to Loch Eadar dha Bheinn before ascending the east ridge. The other begins at Culnacraig, where walkers can tackle the long ridge to Sgùrr an Fhidhleir or take a steeper direct route. The exposed crest of the ridge provides dramatic scenery, though care is needed on the narrow paths. The Postman’s Path links Culnacraig to Strathcanaird along the coast, a challenging route once used by postmen. At the summit, a large flat area offers panoramic views across the landscape. The ridge walk includes peaks like Speicein Coinnich and Speicein nan Garbh Choireachan, each with its own character. The Postman’s Path, though improved in 2021, remains a demanding coastal traverse with steep slopes and burn crossings. The route demands respect, as even experienced walkers may take four hours to complete it. The wild terrain and changing conditions make it a memorable challenge for those who attempt it.
