Mäulesmühle

The Mäulesmühle stands beside the Reichenbach stream in the Siebenmühlental, a short southern spur of Musberg. It is the third of eleven mills along this wooded valley between the Glemswald and the Schönbuch. The K 1227 road runs through the valley, linking Musberg with Steinenbronn three kilometres to the south. The site sits just below 390 metres above sea level on the stream’s east bank, where the Weilerwaldgraben joins from the north.
First recorded in 1383, the present half-timbered house was built in 1819. The mill stopped grinding in 1945, but the name survives from the Maylen family who ran it in the 17th and 18th centuries. Today the building houses an organic restaurant and a small museum. Every Sunday at five o’clock the protected mill wheel and grinding machinery are set in motion for visitors.
The adjoining barn, known as the Komede-Scheuer, once hosted dialect theatre under Albin Braig. His productions included the series Hannes und der Bürgermeister and the later Freunde in der Mäulesmühle. The city now uses the space for cultural events, while the Arbeiterwohlfahrt runs summer holiday activities around the mill. Each May Day and Ascension Day the Musikverein Stadtkapelle Leinfelden holds the Maihocketse Mühlentrubel festival here.
