Rogan's Seat

Rogan’s Seat is a remote hill in the Yorkshire Dales, near East Stonesdale and Gunnerside Gill. It stands on high moorland beside Swaledale, Swinner Gill and Gunnerside Gill. The fell reaches 672 metres and is the joint 17th highest in North Yorkshire. Great Shunner Fell, Ingleborough and Whernside appear on the western skyline. A secondary summit called Water Crag lies to the north-east with a trig point. The route starts from Gunnerside Gill where a bridleway track leads north for two kilometres. Landowners on the grouse moors have not published a public right of way, yet walkers are generally tolerated. The track itself is fairly flat, though the return journey can feel repetitive. The waterfalls in Gunnerside Gill lie just two kilometres from the summit. Views across the wide moorland are open but not dramatic. At the top the summit offers a quiet spot on the high expanse of moor. To the north-east Water Crag’s trig point marks a lower secondary top. The surrounding dales and gills stretch away in all directions. Walkers often combine the ascent with a visit to the nearby waterfalls. The route back follows the same track, making for a straightforward but lengthy descent.
