Bloße Zelle

The Bloße Zelle stands at 480 metres, the highest point on the Hils ridge and in the Alfeld Uplands of Lower Saxony. It sits on the border between Holzminden and Hildesheim districts, about four kilometres north-east of Eschershausen. The ridge belongs to the Ith-Hils Upland, a range of low, forested hills stretching across central Germany. Two figures describe its stature: the summit has a topographic isolation of 18 kilometres and a prominence of roughly 235 metres. These measurements place the Hils and its highest point among the most prominent ridges and summits in the Lower Saxon Hills. The site is valued for its clear views across the surrounding countryside. From the summit, walkers can see as far as the Harz mountains on the horizon when the air is clear. The ridge itself is covered in mixed woodland, with beech and oak dominating the slopes. A narrow forest track leads to the top, used by local hikers and cyclists seeking a quiet challenge. The boundary line between the two districts runs across the summit plateau, marked only by a small post. At the top, a simple wooden post stands on the plateau, its metal plate reading ‘Bloße Zelle 480 m’. The surrounding trees frame distant villages and farmland, giving a sense of space unusual in this part of Germany. The ridge continues north and south as a long, gentle crest, ideal for long walks. The contrast between the quiet summit and the busy lowlands below makes the place memorable.
