Vicus Nörvenich

The Roman settlement of Vicus Nörvenich lies south of Nörvenich in Düren district, North Rhine-Westphalia. It stands between the B477 road and the Neffelbach stream, just below the entrance to Nörvenich airfield. Surface traces show brick, tile, mortar and pottery fragments scattered across the field. Coins found here cover four centuries, from the 1st century BC to the 5th century AD. Pottery points to a shorter period, from the later 1st to the 4th century AD. The site is listed as a protected monument under number 5 in Nörvenich. Excavations by the local history society from 2009 to 2012 uncovered evidence of daily life two thousand years ago. Artefacts and soil layers reveal how the settlement grew and changed over time. The society’s work brought to light tools, household items and traces of buildings. Each find helps piece together the story of the people who once lived along the Neffelbach. Visitors walk over the open field where the settlement once stood. Broken tiles and pottery still appear on the surface after rain. The Neffelbach flows nearby, its banks lined with grass and reeds. A low rise marks the centre of the former village. Information boards explain what the fragments mean. The quiet countryside contrasts with the bustle of the nearby airfield.
