Burg Bogeneck

Burg Bogeneck stands high above the Neckar valley near Oberndorf am Neckar. It is the ruined remains of a medieval spur castle built on a narrow ridge. The site rises 565 metres above sea level and overlooks steep slopes down to the river. Archaeologists believe the walls were first raised in the mid-12th century. Later research by A. Antonow places the main construction at the start of the 13th century. Only fragments of the old shield wall remain, built from large, rusticated stone blocks. The ruins show how the castle once defended the Neckar crossing. A strong shield wall guarded the approach from the plateau. Buckelquader blocks, still visible today, mark the highest surviving parts. The rest of the enceinte and towers have crumbled away over centuries. The location gave the defenders a clear view for many kilometres along the valley. Travellers can still trace the outline of the enceinte on the grassy crest. Visitors walk a short path from the edge of Aistaig to the plateau. Grass covers the former courtyard where buildings once stood. The remaining wall stretches for several metres and rises to about two metres. From the ridge there are wide views over the Neckar valley and the surrounding hills. The quiet spot offers a sense of the castle’s strategic position. The ruins are small but give a clear picture of a once important fortress.
