Prestongrange Parish Church

Prestongrange Parish Church stands in Prestonpans, a former mining town in East Lothian. Built in 1596, it is one of Scotland’s earliest churches after the Reformation. The Hamilton family gave the land, and John Davidson, a bold minister, financed and oversaw its construction. Davidson openly criticised bishops and even King James VI, which led to his imprisonment and lifelong confinement to the parish. The church replaced an older building near Northfield House, destroyed in 1544 during the Rough Wooing. Its clock tower and some stonework survive from the original structure, though the west gable end remains visible inside. The outline of the past is still present beneath the modern roof. The church has been home to 27 ministers since 1596, each leaving their mark on its history. William Carlyle watched the Battle of Prestonpans from the tower in 1745 and later wrote about what he saw. William Bruce Cunningham led the congregation during the 1843 split, when many left to form the Free Church nearby. The two churches reunited in 1981, creating the parish church as it is now. The kirkyard holds gravestones of former ministers and soldiers who fought in the battle. Rev. J. Struthers served for 45 years around 1900, and Moira Herkes became the first female minister in 1988. Inside, the church reflects its 18th- and 19th-century refurbishments, with only the tower and masonry dating to 1596. The outline of the original west wall is still visible under the roof. The kirkyard surrounds the building, with weathered stones marking the lives of those connected to the church. The nearby Free Church, built after the 1843 split, stands a short distance away. The two congregations merged again in 1981, uniting the community. The church and its graveyard tell the story of Prestonpans through centuries of change.
