Staatzer Klippe

The Staatzer Klippe rises sharply from the flat Weinviertel countryside near Staatz in Lower Austria. Made of hard Tithonian limestone, it belongs to the Weinviertel Klippenzone, a strip of ‘piercing crags’ pushed up 17 million years ago when the Alps formed. The 332-metre hill overlooks the surrounding fields by about 100 metres and carries the ruined walls of Burg Staatz on its summit. The hill’s long military use kept it largely clear of trees, creating rare pannonian steppe habitats for eastern steppe plants. Botanists have recorded nationally scarce species such as Oxytropis pilosa, Marrubium peregrinum and Lactuca viminea. After the 17th-century Swedish destruction of the castle, fires and grazing maintained the open landscape until the 20th century. Recent decades of neglect have allowed invading shrubs and trees to spread, threatening these habitats. Visitors follow paths up the limestone flanks to the medieval ruins where stone walls frame wide views over the Weinviertel. At the foot lies the Felsenbühne Staatz, one of Lower Austria’s largest open-air theatres, staging summer musicals beneath the crag. The contrast between the rugged rock and the surrounding farmland makes the site a striking natural and cultural landmark.
