Schloss Albeck stands on a gentle rise above the Gurk valley in Carinthia, a late-baroque building framed by spruce and beech woods. The site has been fortified since the 10th century, when the counts of Friesach-Zeltschach raised a hilltop castle for Saint Hemma’s family. After a century of disputes the bishops of Gurk took charge and in 1680 dismantled the old ruin, carting its stones two kilometres down the Roman road to build the present palace.

The palace still carries the original castle gate, its rounded arch showing the masons’ marks of the Freien von Albeck. Inside, the ground floor rooms are vaulted with barrel and cross ribs, while the upper storey preserves delicate stucco panels and late-baroque panelling. A small Biedermeier lodge beside the gatehouse recalls the days when the building served as a forestry office.

Paths wind through the surrounding woodland, offering glimpses of the Gurk’s rushing waters below. The roof’s plain grey tiles contrast with the whitewashed façades, where faint baroque lines mark the corners and window edges. The whole ensemble, once a centre of feudal justice, now stands as a quiet witness to a thousand years of Carinthian history.
