Wallfahrtskirche Mariä Himmelfahrt

The Catholic parish church of Maria Lankowitz stands beside the Franciscan monastery in the market town of Maria Lankowitz, Voitsberg district, Styria. The church is dedicated to the Visitation of Mary and belongs to the Diocese of Graz-Seckau. It is protected as a listed monument. The present building replaced an earlier church consecrated in 1468. Jakob Schmerlaib designed the new church, built between 1678 and 1681 and consecrated in 1684. A major interior restoration took place in 1955–56. The south portal bears the date 1681 and the west portal 1683. A wooden ridge turret crowns the roof above the choir. Inside, six bays under cross-ribbed vaults form a three-aisled nave ending in a straight wall. The high altar of 1767, by Veit Königer, carries statues of Saints Joachim and Anna, Zacharias and Elisabeth and shelters a small late-medieval carved Madonna. Side altars include the Anna Altar of 1650 with a 1959 statue by Alfred Schlosser and the Joseph Altar of 1684 with paintings by Hans Adam Weissenkircher. The organ case dates from 1737 and the pulpit from 1770.
