Highfield Road was a football stadium in Coventry’s Hillfields district, close to the city centre. It served as Coventry City’s home ground for 106 years. The ground opened in 1899 and hosted its final match on 30 April 2005, a 6–2 win over Derby County. The last goal was scored by Andy Whing, a product of the club’s youth academy. After the game, Elton John performed a concert on the pitch. The club then moved to the Ricoh Arena in the north of the city.

The stadium had one of the largest playing surfaces in English football. In 1981, Jimmy Hill introduced all-seater stands, but fans later removed hundreds of seats after a heavy defeat. Standing areas returned in 1983 before the Taylor Report required all top-flight clubs to have all-seater stadiums. The record attendance was 51,455 for a match against Wolverhampton Wanderers in 1967. By the time it closed, its capacity was 23,489 after modernisation in the mid-1990s.

Today, the site has been redeveloped for housing by George Wimpey plc. The former car parks and stands now stand as streets and gardens. The pitch area was relaid with grass so local children can still play football there. The transformation keeps part of the stadium’s sporting legacy alive in the neighbourhood.
