Church of St Mary Magdalene, Winsford

The Church of St Mary Magdalene stands in Winsford, a village in Somerset. Built before the 13th century, it is a Grade I listed building. The church is dedicated to St Mary Magdalene and was partly restored in 1858. Its tower rises 27.4 metres in three stages. Six bells hang in the tower, four of them cast by Thomas Bilbie in 1765. Inside, a painted panel from 1609 survives from the reign of King James I. The inner doors carry ironwork thought to come from the priory of St Nichola in Barlynch, dating to the 13th century. The Norman font remains in place. A c. 1900 organ arrived by horse-drawn wagon from Dulverton. The church register begins in 1660. Visitors find a quiet village church with ancient fabric and later additions. The tower’s height dominates the skyline. The painted panel and ironwork show skilled craftsmanship. The font and doors recall centuries of use. The organ and register add layers of local history. The setting remains peaceful, away from main roads.
