Frankfurt (Oder) TV tower
The Fernmeldeturm Frankfurt (Oder) is a 103-metre telecommunications tower made of reinforced concrete, standing in the southern part of the city near the Oder river. It belongs to Deutsche Telekom AG and carries directional radio, mobile-phone and amateur-radio antennas. Three amateur-radio repeaters serve the 70-cm, 2-m and ATV bands. Built between 1959 and 1961 for the East German postal service, the tower was designed by Klaus Thimm and engineered by Karl-Heinrich Benkert using slip-form concrete construction. Originally 85.75 metres tall, it was raised to 103 metres after reunification when larger aerials were added. The fourteen floors once housed living and technical rooms for postal staff; today only radio equipment remains. Visitors cannot enter the tower, but its asymmetrical antenna platforms and the surrounding parkland can be viewed from outside. The structure’s clean lines and the wide views across the flat Oder floodplain make it a landmark of southern Frankfurt. A similar but taller tower stands at Karstädt-Pinnow, 121 metres high.
