Focke Museum

The Focke Museum stands on 4.5 hectares in Bremen’s Riensberg neighbourhood. It began in 1924 when two collections merged: a museum of industry and commerce opened in 1884 and a historical museum founded in 1900 by Johann Focke. The site includes a main building opened in 1964, extended in 2002, and several older structures from the 16th to the 19th centuries. Ernst Grohne led the museum from 1924 to 1953 and expanded its archaeological work after 1931. The 1964 building is regarded as one of Bremen’s finest 20th-century structures, praised by the Association of German Architects in 1974. The museum holds over 1,200 years of Bremen’s history, from medieval finds to post-war rebuilding. Permanent displays feature the Bremen Roland’s head, Borgward cars, Koch & Bergfeld silverware and a 1906 Jugendstil room by Heinrich Vogeler. The 2002 Schaumagazin cube, clad in copper, offers viewable storage with three floors of exhibits and multimedia stations. Outside, the Paul Denker lifeboat, the first all-aluminium craft for German search and rescue, rests in the courtyard. Haus Riensberg shows residential life through furniture from the 16th to 20th centuries. Haus Riensberg also hosts the children’s museum and toy collection, while the thatched Eichenhof barn covers prehistory and early history up to the 8th century. Haus Mittelsbüren, a 1586 farmhouse rebuilt here in 1964, illustrates rural life in Büren. The Tarmstedt barn from 1803 and a bronze tournament helmet from the Lesum add further layers of regional heritage. The park itself contains remnants of the Focke-Garten created in the 1950s on a wartime ruin site.
