St Mary's Church, Burford

St Mary’s Church stands a kilometre west of Tenbury Wells in the West Midlands, beside Burford House. Built of stone with tiled roofs, it mixes Norman, Decorated and Perpendicular styles across nave, chancel and tower. The tower’s west doorway and louvred bell openings show the Perpendicular hand, while the chancel keeps 12th-century features. A Grade I listed building, it overlooks a quiet churchyard and a medieval cross to the south. The church’s 19th-century restorer, Aston Webb, rebuilt the tower in Bromsgrove sandstone and added buttresses, crenellations and window tracery. Inside, his fittings include an octagonal Perpendicular font, mahogany reredos, brass lectern and carved pulpit. Powell’s stained glass fills the windows between 1890 and 1902, and monuments recall the Cornwall and Rushout families. Visitors find the canopied sedilia in the chancel, a medieval stoup by the south door and a panel of 14th- and 15th-century tiles in the vestry. The churchyard holds a Grade II cross with carved scenes of the Crucifixion and Nativity, and the war grave of a King’s Shropshire Light Infantry soldier.
