Brands Hatch

Brands Hatch is a motor racing circuit in West Kingsdown, Kent. It began in the 1920s as a grass track used by cyclists and motorcyclists on farmland shaped like a natural amphitheatre. The site was once a military training ground and later hosted early television broadcasts of motorcycle events. In 1950 it became a purpose-built tarmac circuit, the first of its kind in post-war England. Two layouts now run here: the shorter 1.2-kilometre Indy Circuit sits inside the larger 3.9-kilometre Grand Prix track. The venue is owned and operated by MotorSport Vision, led by Jonathan Palmer. The circuit has hosted twelve British Grand Prix races between 1964 and 1986. It has seen historic moments such as Nigel Mansell’s first Formula One win in 1985 and Jo Siffert’s 1968 duel with Chris Amon. The Grand Prix layout features steep hills like Paddock Hill Bend, which rises eight per cent, and fast straights where speeds peak. Sections like Pilgrim’s Drop and Hawthorn Hill add dramatic elevation changes. Noise limits and nearby homes restrict use of the full track to only a few high-profile events each year. Visitors walk along spectator banks that overlook almost the entire Indy Circuit. The Grand Prix route winds through woodland with mid-speed bends such as Westfield and Dingle Dell. Clearways leads to the uphill approach of Clark Curve before the pit straight and finish line. A separate rallycross circuit, designed by four-times champion Trevor Hopkins, joins the main track at key points. The natural bowl shape means views are good from most vantage points, whether watching cars on the short circuit or the sweeping bends of the full layout.
