St. Laurence's Church, Norwell

St Laurence’s Church stands in the quiet village of Norwell, Nottinghamshire, a medieval parish church with Grade I listing. Its stone walls rise beside the old village green, where yew and lime trees frame the entrance. The building has watched over the community for centuries, its fabric shaped by generations. A major restoration in the 1870s by Ewan Christian gave the nave and chancel their present form. Inside, light filters through windows designed to tell stories of faith and craftsmanship. The tower still rings its bells to mark the hours and call worshippers. The church is worth the journey for its outstanding architecture and the names behind it. Charles Eamer Kempe designed the stained glass, filling the aisles with colour and narrative. James Binns of Leeds built the pipe organ, its pipes rising above the west end. The church belongs to a group of four parishes that share ministry and care. Each building in the group—at Caunton, Cromwell and Ossington—adds to the wider heritage of the area. Together they show how local faith and art have been organised across the countryside. Visitors find a calm interior of arcades and pointed arches, their surfaces worn smooth by time. The Kempe windows cast moving patterns on the flagstone floor as the sun shifts. The Binns organ waits in the loft, its bellows silent until played. A screen separates the nave from the chancel, where the altar stands beneath a simple roof. Outside, the churchyard holds weathered headstones and a lychgate at the entrance. The village green beyond offers benches and a place to stand and look back at the tower.
